Clean Air Challenge at COP24

According to the European Commission, the total external costs related to the health effects of smog are estimated around 2.9% of the European GDP every year. In Europe, smog primarily results from combustion of hydrocarbons in road transport and heating. Based on this observation, InnoEnergy has elaborated a study of available solutions to help public authorities alleviate existing smog concentrations in their countries and regions.

Maroš Šefčovič said

During the COP24 EU side-event organised by EIT InnoEnergy, Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission said that “Transport is responsible for 1/3 of all the pollution in Europe. We need policy makers, think tanks and finally innovators to win the battle for clean air.”

Panel discussion

The panelists including also Bertrand Piccard, Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation, Patrick Labat Senior Executive Vice-President at Veolia, Aleksander Nawrat, Deputy Director at NCBIR, Julia Patorska, Leader of Economic Analysis Team at Deloitte and finally Marcin Lewenstein, Innovation Officer at EIT InnoEnergy Central Europe, discussed the results of the Clean Air Challenge report and elaborated it further on how these solutions can be implemented.

CO2-SNG

During the event hosted by Jakub Miler, CEO of EIT InnoEnergy Central Europe, these solutions were emphasised through the case-studies. The CO2-SNG solution launched together with TAURON and RAFAKO, uses CO2 to produce synthetic natural gas, which can be used as an alternative fuel for urban transportation, independent from traditional petrol and diesel supply. The launch of just two CO2-SNG installations in Silesia region will make it possible to replace 30% of the city bus fleet, around 400 Diesel buses will be replaced by new CNG vehicles.
