Background

As part of the Innovation Group, the Investment & Asset Management team drives the sourcing, development, growth, and monetisation of cutting-edge ventures aligned with InnoEnergy’s strategic vision. We are now seeking an Investment Director to lead the Iberia Investment team.

This is a pivotal leadership role combining hands-on investment management with strategic oversight, focused on delivering high-impact results in the energy and climate tech ecosystem across Spain and Portugal.

Key Responsibilities

As Investment Director, you will lead and develop the regional investment strategy, manage a portfolio of equity positions, and oversee a small local team. Your primary responsibilities include:

Investment Leadership

  • Lead the origination and development of new business opportunities in Iberia, ensuring high-quality investment proposals and decision materials (e.g., business cases, due diligence reports) for internal evaluation.
  • Present and defend investment cases to the Investment Committee, aligning with strategic and financial objectives.
  • Oversee and execute negotiations, working alongside Thematic Field Leaders, Portfolio Managers, and other relevant stakeholders to bring investment cases to successful closure.
  • Be part of the global investment team to contribute to the development of InnoEnergy investment and asset management strategy and deployment working together with the central team and the other regional Investment directors.

Portfolio Management & Monetisation

  • Actively manage the equity evolution of the regional portfolio, proposing follow-on investments or divestments where appropriate.
  • Drive value creation, define and execute monetisation strategies, including orchestrating exit scenarios in close coordination with the central team.
  • Mobilize the global sales and business development teams to generate commercial opportunities for portfolio companies.

Value Creation & Ecosystem Engagement

  • Define the roadmap and deliver value-added services to strengthen the business cases of portfolio companies—making them bigger, faster, and de-risked.
  • Support delivery of post-investment value creation initiatives through the activation of the innovation ecosystem (local, corporate, and external partners).
  • Build and maintain a strong network of founders, co-investors, strategic partners, financing institutions, and relevant industry players to enhance deal flow and portfolio development.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership and guidance to the Iberia investment team, fostering a high-performance culture and supporting the development of individual team members.
  • Ensure efficient collaboration with other teams across functions and geographies, in alignment with both the regional and functional reporting lines.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in cleantech startups/ventures, venture capital, corporate finance, or relevant start-up ecosystems.
  • Strong track record of leading investment processes, including origination, negotiation, execution, and exit.
  • Extensive expertise in early-stage (pre-seed and seed) investments, with a strong track record in driving commercialization, industrial scaling, and international expansion within the climate tech and energy sectors. Proven experience collaborating closely with start-ups and scale-ups to accelerate growth.
  • Building and developing effective teams.
  • Proficiency in public funding instruments is a plus.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, fluent in Spanish, and English. Portuguese is a plus.
  • High proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and hands-on leader who thrives in dynamic environments. You are entrepreneurial, collaborative, and results-driven—with the ability to balance operational execution with long-term vision.

  • Structured and analytical approach to complex investment and business creation decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills to engage across multiple stakeholder levels.
  • Comfortable working in a multicultural, cross-functional, and evolving ecosystem.
  • Passionate about innovation, sustainability, and creating tangible impact through investments.
  • Team player
  • Ability to sell and negotiate value propositions
  • Ability to create relationships based on trust

InnoEnergy was established in 2010 by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, as one of its first Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KIC). In 2025, the EIT and InnoEnergy entered into a new partnership, where they will continue collaborating on specific projects.

Background

Are you a strategic all-rounder who thrives in fast-paced environments, seamlessly shifting between ideation, execution, and leadership? InnoEnergy is seeking a Manager Business Line – Company Building, a hands-on venture builder and adaptable team leader who can wear multiple hats to create and launch high-impact Newco’s.

Reporting directly to the Director Company Building, you’ll play a pivotal role across the full lifecycle of venture creation—from opportunity spotting to A-round support. You’ll work closely with cross-functional colleagues and build agile, fit-for-purpose teams tailored to each phase of development.

This is a true “utility player” role—part strategist, part operator, part dealmaker—bringing both breadth and depth to everything you touch.

Your Mission

You will be the go-to person for taking promising Newco ideas and turning them into real companies that accelerate the energy transition. Your role spans four key stages:

1) Opportunity Spotting & Strategic Framing

  • Identify white spaces in the market aligned with InnoEnergy’s strategic value chains—or uncover new ones that warrant creating a fourth chain.
  • Translate macro trends, emerging technologies, and policy shifts into viable newco opportunities.

2) Selection & Assessment

  • Rapidly assess ideas, mobilizing internal and external expertise.
  • Set up lean teams to test assumptions, develop business cases, and pitch for pre-investment funding.

3) Building & Launching

  • Assemble and lead high-impact project teams to develop strong investment cases and win Executive Board & IC approval.
  • Secure early-stage investors, strategic partners, and help build the founding team.
  • Act as interim business leader when needed, driving the venture from paper to launch.

4) Post-Launch Support

  • Support ventures through to their A-round, ensuring governance, performance, and course-correction as needed.
  • Guide ventures to autonomy while ensuring alignment with InnoEnergy’s broader goals.

What You’ll Own

Strategic Leadership

  • Ensure each newco adds tangible value to decarbonization and industrial innovation.

Tactical Execution

  • Jump into various phases as needed—ideation, operations, fundraising, governance.
  • Manage resources flexibly, drawing from internal experts, partners, and consultants.
  • Bring AI, digital twinning, and data-driven methods into the venture creation toolkit.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a connector—linking ideas, people, capital, and momentum.
  • Build trusted relationships with shareholders, grant providers, policymakers, and the European Commission.
  • Actively shape the ecosystem through events, thought leadership, and digital channels.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience building ventures, businesses, or spin-offs from concept to launch.
  • Background in business development, capex-heavy project delivery, or strategic innovation.
  • Strong financial and commercial acumen—able to build convincing investment cases and equity stories.
  • Understanding of the energy transition, industrial decarbonization, and emerging tech trends.
  • Able to wear many hats—strategist, operator, communicator, problem-solver.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, agility in shifting roles, and capacity to lead diverse, cross-cultural teams.
  • Familiarity with AI, digital twinning, and data tools in a business context.
  • Fluent in English; Dutch is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel across Europe as needed.

Your Impact

  • Contribute directly to InnoEnergy’s Vision 2030 by helping build €4B in Newco value.
  • Enable the creation of 300,000 jobs across the value chains.
  • Drive meaningful CO₂ reduction via scalable industrial ventures.

Why This Role is Unique

This is not a classic line management or innovation role. It’s for someone who thrives in motion—who can move between blue-sky thinking and gritty execution, between boardroom conversations and boots-on-the-ground work. You’re the kind of person people rely on to “just get it done,” no matter what “it” is.

If you’re looking to make your mark as a multi-skilled venture builder with strategic influence and operational range, this is the role for you.
