The winning idea that involved using SaltX thermal energy storage technology on cruise ships, in order to reduce their fuel consumption and enable the switch-off of the engines when docking in the harbour, came from a team composed of three EIT InnoEnergy Master’s in Energy Technologies and two Master’s in Renewable Energy students. As part of the award the team got the opportunity to present their solution at the opening speech of STHLM Tech Fest, where it was rewarded with big applause.

In the ideation process – only 24 hours were available to come up with the innovative business case – co-creation and design thinking methods, as they are taught in the extracurricular activities of the team members’ respective Master Programmes, proved valuable. Now, the team is assessing the option of developing the idea further and creating an actual business out of it.
