Nordic SeaFarm and FutureLab & Partners launch Manatee Biomaterials to pioneer seaweed-based materials

Nordic Seafarm, an InnoEnergy portfolio company, and FutureLab & Partners have joined forces to establish Manatee Biomaterials, a joint-venture dedicated to developing sustainable biomaterials from seaweed. This collaboration seeks to drive innovation in ocean-based solutions, leveraging seaweed’s potential to address global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, and environmental degradation.

A new venture for sustainable biomaterials

Manatee Biomaterials will integrate advanced aquaculture and biomaterial science to create renewable materials. Initially, the venture will operate on a small scale, focusing on seaweed-based product launches and proof-of-concept collaborations. These will explore durable plastic alternatives, sustainable packaging, and eco-friendly furniture components. Several development projects are already underway in partnership with Swedish industry leaders.

Combining expertise

Nordic SeaFarm leverages its expertise in seaweed cultivation, while FutureLab & Partners brings cutting-edge research, innovation, and system design to establish new circular technologies.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with FutureLab & Partners in launching Manatee Biomaterials,” says Simon Hilmersson, CEO of Nordic SeaFarm. “This partnership enables us to unlock the full potential of seaweed, positioning us at the forefront of regenerative material solutions. We believe seaweed-based biomaterials can revolutionize industries and accelerate the shift toward a circular economy.”

Unlocking the ocean’s potential for a sustainable future

With oceans covering over 70% of the planet, they hold vast untapped potential for sustainable resources. Ocean-based biomaterials—ranging from bioplastics derived from seaweed to biopolymers like chitin and collagen—offer unique properties suitable for diverse industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles, packaging, and construction.

As a proud investor in Nordic SeaFarm, InnoEnergy is excited to see them take the lead in such transformative journey. Manatee Biomaterials is not just a new venture —it’s a movement towards a more sustainable and circular future, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish next!
