Altris secures 80.75 MSEK in new funding and strengthens its leadership team

Our portfolio company Altris is taking a significant step forward in its journey to bring sustainable, European-made sodium-ion batteries to market. With renewed investor confidence, the company is well positioned to advance its technology and commercial impact.

Altris, the pioneering Swedish sodium-ion battery developer, has raised an additional 80.75 MSEK (approx. €7.3M) from existing investors, including InnoEnergy. The investment reinforces strong confidence in the company’s strategic direction and comes shortly after the appointment of Christer Bergquist as permanent CEO – marking an important step as Altris sharpens its commercial focus.

Founded in 2017, Altris has emerged as one of Europe’s leading innovators in sodium-ion batteries, built on its proprietary Prussian White cathode material and a fully European technology footprint. The company’s continued backing from strategic investors reflects the increasing relevance of sodium-ion technology as Europe accelerates the deployment of renewable energy and seeks cost-effective, safe, and sustainable energy-storage alternatives.

Christer Bergquist, who joined Altris in 2023 and has served as acting CEO since September 2024, now takes on the role permanently. “He has demonstrated strong leadership in evolving market conditions,” says Martin Anderlind, Chairman of the Board. “We have exciting opportunities ahead of us, and the board looks forward to working with Christer in this next phase.”

Strengthening the path to scalable deployment

As market dynamics shift, Altris is implementing a strategic realignment to increase its focus on commercial partnerships and customer-driven project development. The company will discontinue earlier plans for pilot production in Sandviken and consolidate operations in Uppsala, Sweden. These moves are designed to channel resources towards the areas with the greatest impact on near-term commercialisation.

“I look forward to continuing in my role as CEO and leading the company through the upcoming stages of our development,” says Christer Bergquist. “We are adapting the business to strengthen Altris’ position and to create the right conditions to deliver on our strategy going forward.”

A technology ready for Europe’s energy transition

InnoEnergy has supported Altris from its early stages because the company develops scalable, safe, and economically competitive sodium-ion batteries that can serve a wide range of applications – from stationary storage to mobility and other emerging sectors. Sodium-ion offers a combination of cost stability, abundant raw materials, and strong safety performance, making it a highly relevant solution for Europe’s growing energy-storage needs.

“Altris represents exactly the kind of European battery innovation we aim to accelerate – with a technology that is scalable, sustainable, and strategically important for the energy transition,” says Magnus Lundin, Investment Director at InnoEnergy Scandinavia. “Our continued investment reflects confidence in the team’s execution and the strong market potential for a European-built, versatile battery solution. We are proud to support Altris as they advance toward commercial readiness.”
