FLEXIBILITY FIRST: SMARTER STRATEGIES TO EXPAND AND OPTIMISE THE GRID

Join our webinar on JUNE 11, 15:00-16:00 CET

About the webinar

As Europe embarks on an ambitious journey towards massive electrification to decarbonise its energy system, the demand on the electricity grid is set to increase dramatically. By 2030, annual electricity demand is projected to more than double – from 2,700 TWh in 2024 to nearly 6,000 TWh – driven by ambitious climate policies and commitments from key sectors including heavy industry, transport, and residential heating.

This surge places unprecedented pressure on the electricity grid. Traditional infrastructure expansion alone cannot keep pace with the speed or scale of the transition. Instead, the system will require scalable, integrated solutions that combine flexibility, digitalisation, and innovative market mechanisms.

The distribution grid, in particular, will be under the most strain, facing increasingly dynamic and decentralised demand patterns. In this context, data-driven, grid-edge solutions will be essential to ensure system resilience and avoid unnecessary infrastructure costs.

This webinar will explore the role of flexibility resources and smart technical solutions in modernising Europe’s electricity system, with insights relevant far beyond its borders. We will examine how targeted investments in these areas can relieve grid constraints, support renewable integration, and enable a cost-effective, scalable expansion of electricity use.

Key topics include:
  • Relieving stress on the distribution grid: Strategies for using existing infrastructure more efficiently, operating closer to system limits without compromising reliability, and smoothing out demand peaks.
  • The role of digitalisation and AI: How emerging technologies, including AI, are reshaping grid operations; and how new solutions can integrate with the current practices of Distribution System Operators (DSOs).
  • Regulatory readiness for a smarter grid: Examining whether today’s regulatory frameworks support smart-grid innovation, and what’s still missing to enable broader adoption across the system.

Speakers & Panelists
  • George Paunescu, Policy Officer, DG ENER, European Commission
  • Henri Klemmer, Co-founder & CEO, Hepta
  • Cristina Corchero, Co-founder & CTO, Bamboo Energy
  • Johan Söderbom, Thematic Leader Smart Grids & Energy Storage, InnoEnergy

Additional speakers to be announced shortly.

Join us to explore how to build a smarter, more responsive grid – and the technologies that will make it possible. Whether you are an investor looking to capitalise on emerging opportunities or an industry leader seeking to understand where the grid is headed, this webinar will deliver valuable insights on the future of energy systems.
