As Europe embarks on an ambitious journey towards massive electrification to decarbonise its energy system, the demand on the electricity grid is set to increase dramatically. By 2030, annual electricity demand is projected to more than double – from 2,700 TWh in 2024 to nearly 6,000 TWh – driven by ambitious climate policies and commitments from key sectors including heavy industry, transport, and residential heating.
This surge places unprecedented pressure on the electricity grid. Traditional infrastructure expansion alone cannot keep pace with the speed or scale of the transition.
