InnoBlog: Choosing Aalto University

Choosing a university for a Master’s is a hard decision, especially when you have to consider multiple factors with your career and pursuit of knowledge being at the forefront. As students, we will be thinking of not only academics but also the social scene and if it will be easy to blend in. Here are my reasons why I chose Aalto University as part of my EIT InnoEnergy journey.

5 reasons to study at Aalto University

  1. The versatility of courses: Even though I am specialising in Energy Storage, the availability of courses is not limited to just the storage field. Aalto provides electives which range from entrepreneurship journey to assist those who are interested in the start-up/business side of things to language training. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to upskill themselves in their topic of interest.

  1. International ranking:  Aalto is a product of a merging of 3 highly prestigious universities in Finland: Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Arts and Design. This makes Aalto a university with experienced teaching faculty and with high quality of education. The university is currently ranked 112 by the QS world rankings. It was also ranked 9 as the best university under the age of 50.

  1. Student Culture: As an international student, one of the first questions that pop into mind is whether there will be trouble fitting in due to cultural and language barriers. Aalto University boasts a very strong international student population and almost all the courses are taught in English. There are also clubs ranging from sports to photography and even nature-based activities. These clubs provide a platform to make lifelong friends from all walks of life.

  1. Career: Aalto is recognised as one of the best universities in not only the country but also the world. This makes job hunting easier as there are higher chances for you to get employed. Aalto has an amazing start-up culture for those who are interested in entrepreneurship. There are multiple hackathons and conferences such as Slush and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes). There are also opportunities to go into the research side through Aalto.

  1. Location: Aalto University is located in a place called Otaniemi, Espoo. Espoo is the hub for technology and provides a lot of opportunities to network and connect with different people. Espoo is also very picturesque with national parks and beautiful landscapes. It’s a wonderful place where technology and nature exist in harmony.

So, these are some of the reasons why I decided to choose Aalto University as part of my EIT InnoEnergy Master´s. I look forward to making memories and connections that will be long-lasting. However, I truly know that studying in Aalto will be a memorable experience!
