MSc in Nuclear Energy Chih-yuan Isaac Yao has the rare skill of being an excellent communicator. He dreams of using his assets to help bring reliable, clean energy to the world while smoothing over the differences that slow down progress. He brings a fresh outlook and kind spirit to the EIT InnoEnergy Master School, where he is polishing his skills and building his network to make a big difference!
Why are you interested in sustainable energy?
Our generation has an enormous responsibility to make sustainable energy accessible as our first priority – for all humankind. Because energy provides hope, and hope elevates humanity. I believe that nuclear power is one of the best sources of clean energy, yet underrated by false information. Nuclear power is a perfect energy source for base-load energy of all kinds, and I aspire to share this energy with the world – providing electricity to places that still suffer from an insufficient power supply and spreading this hope.
What part do you plan to play in the energy transition?
For the energy transition, communication is the most crucial step to integrate the whole system. I want to be a pivotal player in bridging the differences so we can make the best use of each energy technology. I would like to work in a consultant company that brings energy solutions to different countries, evaluating and optimising to make the best use of energy. There will always be conflict from various stakeholders with different perspectives, not understanding each other or refusing to negotiate. I would love to come in, bridge the differences, and eliminate the impasse with my communication and interpersonal skills.
What attracted you to the EIT InnoEnergy Master’s School and what was your favourite part of the programme?
EIT InnoEnergy provides an opportunity to study in two of the top master’s schools in Europe. My favourite part is that they make learning easy for us; whether by webinar, events or access to industry partners. It allows everyone access to all kinds of learning methods and to try out which one works the best for them. Moreover, the summer Grenoble Ecole de Management school enhances our business acumen to play smart in our future career. Also, during the course in KTH, I had the opportunity to access a radiation and dosimetry laboratory for experiments at the Paris-Saclay nuclear research centre. This practical approach helps us to understand real-world applications of this technology and how engineers work together to perform the best.
How has the EIT InnoEnergy network helped you on your path?
EIT InnoEnergy plays a big role in helping us to leverage the wide-reaching network by giving us access to companies, interesting events and the career centre. The contacts we make during the programme give us so many different areas of expertise to tap into and plant the seeds for our future endeavours.
In what way do you believe your time at EIT InnoEnergy Master School will contribute to your professional career?
I believe that by combining the soft power that InnoEnergy provides from summer business school and the hard power of astute engineering studies from top European universities – they will cooperate perfectly together and become our strongest spear and shield.
