Organic electrolytes for flow batteries enabling ultra low-cost European energy storage

The need

Battery storage capacity must expand 300-fold by 2050 to meet global climate targets. However, current lithium-ion and vanadium flow batteries depend on critical metals with volatile prices, sourced from distant and insecure supply-chains.

The solution

Rivus is commercialising a proprietary, water-based organic electrolyte manufactured from widely-available bulk chemicals in standard European chemical plants. The electrolyte functions as a direct replacement for vanadium in commercially-available flow-battery hardware. Battery testing and system-level modelling indicate a 40–50% reduction in total system cost, and an up to 80% decrease in levelised cost of storage for 6-24-hour applications.

The value proposition

  • Cost-effective: 40-50% lower CapEx than vanadium flow batteries.
  • Safe: non-flammable and non-explosive.
  • Resilient supply chain: metal-free formulation made in the EU using organic materials.
  • Close-to-market: compatible with commercially available flow battery hardware.
