InnoEnergy Skills Institute trains 100,000 workers for Europe’s battery sector

The InnoEnergy Skills Institute announced today at a celebration event "Skilling at Scale for the Battery Industry" that it has surpassed the milestone of successfully training 100,000 learners through the European Battery Alliance (EBA) Academy. Launched in 2022, following a mandate from the European Commission, the Academy is Europe’s first Net-Zero Academy to address the needs of a rapidly evolving industry and its workforce.

Oana Penu, Director of the InnoEnergy Skills Institute:

“Equipping Europe’s workforce with the right skills is a necessity for Europe’s competitiveness in strategic sectors. Reaching the milestone of 100,000 trained learners is a testament to the power of targeted, industry-focused training initiatives. However, there is still a long way to go to equip the workforce with all the skills needed for the green transition. The European Battery Alliance Academy has set a new standard for collaboration between industry and academia.”

Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva, DG EAC, European Commission:

“I am thrilled to celebrate the EBA Academy’s milestone of reaching 100,000 workers. We need the right skills to increase the employability of our workforce while addressing the demands of rapidly expanding critical sectors such as the European battery market. The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and EIT InnoEnergy have proven to be very effective in creating the EBA Academy and upskilling and reskilling 100,000 workers in less than three years. I am happy that the EIT will create other Net-Zero skill academies replicating this successful model.”

Expansion of upskilling services

Building on its success, the Academy plans to expand its services to sourcing, hiring, onboarding, and retention, ensuring a holistic approach to workforce development.

Skilling at Scale for the Battery Industry: A Milestone Celebration Event

The online event not only marked the significant milestone of the first Net-Zero Academy project and recognised the relevance of skill development efforts in the battery sector, but also addressed the future paradigm of workforce development in Europe placing people front and centre.

Attendees heard keynote speeches from Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva, European Commission, Director for Innovation, Digital Education and International Cooperation, DG EAC and EIT Director Martin Kern before a thought-provoking panel on “Building the Future Workforce for a Net-Zero Europe”.
