Prime Batteries Technology, a portfolio company of InnoEnergy, has been selected to supply a 72 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) for Hidroelectrica, Romania’s largest renewable energy producer. The battery system will be deployed at the Crucea Nord Wind Farm in Constanța County and is expected to become fully operational within 12 months.
Boosting grid flexibility with local innovation
Valued at €16 million, the project is Hidroelectrica’s first investment in battery storage. It aims to improve the flexibility and efficiency of renewable energy integration into Romania’s grid. Developed in partnership with Romanian integrator ENEVO Group, more than 80% of the project’s components and services will be sourced locally, highlighting the capabilities of the domestic clean energy sector.
The BESS will allow for surplus wind energy to be stored during low-demand periods and dispatched during peak hours, contributing to grid stability, decarbonisation, and energy security.
Romanian technology on the European stage
“We are proud that our company is able to supply energy storage systems of this scale. This project is proof that Romanian technology is competitive and ready to support both national and international energy goals,” said Vicențiu Ciobanu, CEO of Prime Batteries Technology.
Founded in 2016 near Bucharest, Prime Batteries Technology develops advanced battery systems for mobility, industrial, and grid-scale applications. This project marks a major step forward for Romania’s energy storage capabilities and underscores Prime’s role in enabling Europe’s clean energy transition.
